Muay Thai in America Recap: Simon Marcus in top form, Amanda Kelly upsets the “Queen of Muay Thai” and more!
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to catch the Muay Thai in America event but our friends at Muay Thai Authority including the always incredible Scott Hirano behind the lens were on hand to report the exciting event featuring some of the worlds best fighters. Muay Thai in America “In Honor of the King” took place last night at Raleigh Studios in Playa Vista, CA. In the night’s main event Canadian powerhouse Simon Marcus faced Sadibou Sy of Sweden. Marcus was able to keep his perfect record intact as he improved to 29-0 with a third round knockout. Early on in the fight Sy was using some good ring movement to keep Marcus from walking him down, Sy was also able to connect with some solid punches. In the third round Marcus continued to move forward as he tried to walk Sy down, once in range Marcus connected with a right elbow to the head of Sy that clearly hurt him and Marcus followed with a left elbow that sent Sy down. Sy was unable to get up and the fight was stopped. Marcus is now 6-0 in 2012 and continues to show why he is considered one of the best in the world. Read more…

As he is remembering, I realize the striking similarities between where we are sitting, in the backstage dressing room at Madison Square Garden, and the setting of that scene.
Lion Fight 7 – Results & Takeaways
By Eric Rivera Lion Fight 7 is most likely going to go down as the event that featured “the right cross heard around the world”. Now that the smoke has cleared after last week’s event and fans have finally wrapped their heads around what happened during the event’s marquee bout, it’s as good a time as any to talk about what we can take away from what was yet another fantastic card put together by Lion Fight Promotions. Walker vs Schilling: The Aftermath Going in to the main event of Lion Fight 7, pretty much everyone in the so-called “Muay Thai Media”, as well as those in the American Muay Thai community as a whole, had Eddie “Showtime” Walker as a huge underdog versus Joe Schilling. After interviewing and getting to know Eddie for our “America At A Glance” article before his fight, I can’t say I wasn’t pulling for Eddie to score an upset. But wanting Eddie to score an upset and thinking he would actually do it are two completely different things. Joe Schilling is an extremely dangerous fighter. He is the type of fighter that comes into a fight not only determined and 100% confident in his abilities, but is also always looking to win in devastating fashion. UPDATE – RESULTS AT BOTTOM OF POST! During these past Olympic Games, one of the most talked about stories in the media was the success of the U.S. women’s teams compared to the lackluster performance of the men. More often than not, the women of the U.S. national team raised their gold medals high while the men had to make due with silver, bronze, or nothing at all. In almost every sport besides basketball, the U.S. women’s teams prevailed yet the men floundered. The U.S. women’s relay team set a new world record. The U.S Women’s soccer team? Gold. The U.S. Women’s water polo team? Gold. Beach Volleyball? Gold. Gymnastics team finals? Gold. And where were the men’s teams in all of this? In every one of the aforementioned sports, they didn’t even make the podium. Female athletes everywhere have made a statement that anything a man can do, they can do just as well. And let it be known that combat sports are no exception. Using the past Olympic games as an example once again, while the U.S. men’s boxing team failed to advance past the round of 16, the U.S.A’s Clarissa Shields won gold in a sport that had no Olympic women’s division until these games. In Judo, none of the U.S.A.’s men got better than bronze while American Kayla Harrison not only became the first American woman to achieve Olympic Judo gold, she was the first American to ever attain Olympic Judo gold…period.
