Meet the Canadians – Part 4 – Natalie Yip
By Jenypher Lanthier Senior MTiL correspondent Jenypher Lanthier sits down with Siam #1 fighter Natalie Yip before her pro debut bout at Lion Fight 9 against undefeated American Muay Thai standout Tiffany Van Soest
Meet the Canadians – Part 3 – Simon Marcus
By Jenypher Lanthier I am sitting ringside at Siam No.1 in Toronto, Canada. I sit close enough to feel the occasional drop of sweat whip towards me from a powerful swing kick or punch. Simon Marcus is hitting pads with Ajahn Suchart. The cracking sound that it makes is devastating, like thunderclaps as bones collide against leather with a force and willpower that is not often witnessed live in person. I have trained with Ajahn before, so I am aware of what it feels like to do only five rounds of what can best be described as me trying to hit as hard as I can continuously, while he resists my power with the pads. Each weapon thrown is a fight against his power. If you are not throwing with full power his resistance will make you feel like your weapon just bounces off his Thai pad. I watch as Simon destroyed the pads for five whole rounds and look like he still had energy for more after. This is just a small glimpse of what he must endure to be able to stay at the top and fight opponents such as Artem Levin. It is a mere fraction of the amount of dedication and focus required for him to be where he is. So that got me thinking, “Why? Why really go through all this?” So I asked him. Without further ado, here is my interview with Simon “Bad Bwoy” Marcus. Simon faces possibly one of his toughest challenges … Continue reading
Lion Fight 8 – Van Soest vs Rufus: A Preview
By Jenypher Lanthier On an unnecessarily cold Saturday night in November, I had the privilege of having two of my fighters fighting on Kru Trevor Smandych’s Journey Fight Series event in Calgary, Canada. Lucky for me, my fighters fought early in the evening and that left the rest of the fights for me to enjoy with my team. The card had some great North American talent on it including a fast paced bout between Jessica ‘Thumper’ Gladstone and Alexis Rufus. I watched the height disadvantaged Rufus enter the ring confident and strong. Jessica entered the ring calmly with a long and lanky build resembling that of Julie Kitchen. In a five round fight where the action never stopped, I witnessed the shorter (by three inches) Rufus wear down Gladstone relentlessly with a barrage of punches and elbows. As a typically shorter-than-my-opponents fighter myself I appreciated the strength and aggression it took to over power someone taller. Rufus was impressive. The tables are about to turn where Rufus is the taller opponent and more experienced of the two but she faces a tough challenge in Tiffany Van Soest.
Eddie Walker joins the growing group of Americans heading to Glory
Glory continues to cement itself as the top kickboxing promotion in the world. With a roster featuring most of the world’s top talents and what seems like, up until now, an intelligent business plan in order to continue it’s impressive growth, Glory is establishing itself as the pinnacle of Kickboxing, and the promotion where many up and coming fighters will no doubt dream to compete. As Muay Thai and Kickboxing continue growing in popularity worldwide, the U.S. is no longer falling behind and is also prepping a steady stream of top class athletes to represent the red, white, and blue inside the Glory ring. Ky Hollenbeck and Michael “Chase” Corley were the first Americans to head overseas and fight at Glory. Recently, A fight between Joe Schilling and Steve Wakeling has been all but confirmed for a Glory card in London on March 23rd, 2013. This alone is an amazing match up since Joe Schilling has been hungry to fight the UK standout for some time. While most people would probably like to see a Schilling vs. Wakeling fight contested under Full Muay Thai rules, this fight is going to be without a doubt one of the most anticipated fights of 2013, no matter if it’s contested under Muay Thai rules or K-1 rules.
