The 22nd Installment of the Isuzu Cup Tournament begins August 27th!
A couple of years ago a Muay Thai tournament was held in Thailand titled the “Five Star Fried Chicken Tournament”. Now to people with no knowledge of Muay Thai, the name of the tournament sounds like an event where Paula Deen would be an “expert” judge. However, the tournament was in fact a fighting tournament and not a fried chicken eating challenge where Adam Richman tried to exact his dominance over deep fried poultry. I bring this up because I have always found it humorous that the Muay Thai scene in Thailand always integrates their sponsor brand into just about everything, whether it be logos on shorts, names of tournaments, or even going as far as having your sponsor name as part of your ring name. Consider this years participant in the 22nd Isuzu Cup, Noppakrit Namplatrahoymuk. His fighting surname translates into Hoy Muk Fish Sauce, which just reaches all sorts of new levels of awesomeness. Also in this years lineup is Petchasawin Seatransferry…which is far more self explanatory. Either way, I really feel that the UFC should follow suit and have their fighters take on surnames representative of their sponsors. I think all sorts of hilarity would ensue and would serve to bring in an entirely new era of sponsorship opportunities for the UFC. Kem Sitsongpeenong wins Isuzu Tournament, earns Thai Fight spot
Earlier Today…or well Yesterday if you are reading this from Southeast Asia, Kem Sitsongpeenong fought and won his way to the Izuzu Tournament title. Kem’s opponent, Nopparat Keatkhamtorn simply had no answer for Kem as he was repeatedly kept at bay with well-timed teep kicks, thus giving Kem the opportunity of landing punishing body kicks. Kem’s hands also played a factor in the win as he repeatedly threw a lead left hook and low kick combination that consistently found the target. In the 3rd round Kem began opening up with elbows. Halfway through the 3rd Round, Kem landed a beautiful left jabbing elbow that ended the night for Nopparat. As was announced previously, the winner of the Isuzu tournament would receive a spot on the next installment of the popular Thai Fight tournament. In addition to a spot in the tournament, Kem Sitsongpeenong earned himself a fight purse of 1 million baht, which is just shy of $33,000 US dollars. Check out the video of the fight below. The Tournament Final was held at Omnoi Stadium in Bangkok.
