Warriors Cup XII Results and Recap – Harrison stops Greskiewicz; Hlavacek, Ibrahim, and Topic get the W.

It’s 1:27 on the East Coast and honestly I would love nothing more than to go straight to bed and get some much needed sleep. But I love all of you Muay Thai crazed lunatics and am pretty much convinced that you cannot find any semblance of peaceful rest until you find out the results of the Warriors Cup XII event. So fear not for I bring you those results as well as the promise of good restful sleep! Warriors Cup XII was an exciting event that started off by showcasing some of New Jersey’s promising amateur talent, facing off against fighters from the neighboring Big Apple. Although many of these fighters were pretty green and new to the Muay Thai game, they showed a ton of talent and put on some really exciting fights. Some amateur fights that stood out to me were the fights between Chantal Perry and Giovanna Scano, Flavio Brita and Justin Corbalis, and The Warriors Cup amateur lightweight title fight between Rodolphe Felix and Junaid Hamid. A lot of these amateurs really demonstrated skill and poise that left me excited about the future of Muay Thai in America. I feel it is important that we recognize the skill and sacrifice of these talented amateurs as they move up through the ranks. Even if they don’t ever venture on and enter the pro ranks, the fact that they entered the ring and fought the good fight and represented Muay Thai is a feat worth recognizing. With … Continue reading

An explosive Muay Thai weekend – Warriors Cup, Friday Night Fights, and Thailand vs. Challenger

I woke up quite nervous this morning. The feeling was suprisingly similar to when you wake up after a long night of partying; head still in a haze from copious amount of booze, and ears ringing from the loud bass, courtesy of the crappy music at some smoke filled club you thought would be cool but was nowhere remotely close to being anything that could be called cool. You wipe the sleep from you eyes, turn over and realize you are sharing a bed with someone you don’t remember ever having met. That’s when the nervousness hits; your palms sweat, your stomach tightens, and you try your best to remember how you got into this situation and who this person is. Now, mind you I have never been in this kind of situation, because when it comes to meeting women, I have been on the receiving end of a lot more knockouts then outright victories. However, I can imagine such a situation is nerve wracking and I feel that the feeling would be frighteningly similar to what I was feeling this morning, right? For some reason, every time there is a Muay Thai event, I get nervous. Maybe it’s because I want to fight; Or maybe it’s because my friends are fighting and I am excited for them; Or maybe it’s because I’m weird. Nonetheless, the reason I felt such nerves this morning is because today marks the beginning of an action packed Muay Thai weekend here in the U.S. … Continue reading

Muay Thai is Life’s State of the Union – A new series examining the status of our sport in the fabric of America

Growing up in South America, there could not be any sort of conversation without a discussion about soccer breaching the subject at some point. Barbers, maids, street vendors, the young businessmen in their perfectly pressed shirts; all of them had something to say about the previous night’s game or their favorite players recent actions on the pitch. Soccer, to almost every nation outside of the United States, is a more than a sport. It is a huge part of their national identity. It is both a passion and an obsession. While a hobby for some and akin to a religion for others, it is a sport that connects to the very soul of any nation that lists it as their national sport. The players are more than just athletes on a field, to both the young and old fan alike, they are Gods. When I was growing up, I remember trembling in front of the TV as my favorite team made a play. I would grasp my shirt, which either contained the colors of my team or the name of my favorite player and would pray as the player struck the ball, asking and willing the ball to reach the back of the net. I remember the extreme elation I would feel after a victory and the heartache that came with a loss. Aside from Soccer, the only sport that brings me the same feelings of elation, heartache, and excitement is Muay Thai. Borrowing a quote from Danny Boyle’s film … Continue reading
